Evolutionary Computation in Economics and Finance

Evolutionary Computation in Economics and Finance
$307.73

After a decade’s development, evolutionary computation (EC) proves to be a powerful tool kit for economic analysis. While the demand for this equipment is increasing, there is no volume exclusively written for economists. This volume for the first time helps economists to get a quick grasp on how EC may support their research. A comprehensive coverage of the subject is given, that includes the following three areas: game theory, agent-based economic modelling and financial engineering. Twenty leading scholars from each of these areas contribute a chapter to the volume. The reader will find himself treading the path of the history of this research area, from the fledgling stage to the burgeoning era. The results on games, labour markets, pollution control, institution and productivity, financial markets, trading systems design and derivative pricing, are new and interesting for different target groups. The book also includes informations on web sites, conferences, and computer software.

The Practice of Econometric Theory

The Practice of Econometric Theory
$283.78

Econometric theory, as presented in textbooks and the econometric literature generally, is a somewhat disparate collection of findings. Its essential nature is to be a set of demonstrated results that increase over time, each logically based on a specific set of axioms or assumptions, yet at every moment, rather than a finished work, these inevitably form an incomplete body of knowledge. The practice of econometric theory consists of selecting from, applying, and evaluating this literature, so as to test its applicability and range. The creation, development, and use of computer software has led applied economic research into a new age. This book describes the history of econometric computation from 1950 to the present day, based upon an interactive survey involving the collaboration of the many econometricians who have designed and developed this software. It identifies each of the econometric software packages that are made available to and used by economists and econometricians worldwide.

A Science of Operations: Machines, Logic and the Invention of Programming

A Science of Operations: Machines, Logic and the Invention of Programming
$242.39

Today, computers fulfil a dazzling array of roles, a flexibility resulting from the great range of programs" "that can be run on them. "A Science of Operations" examines the history of what we now call programming, defined not simply as "computer "programming, but more broadly as the definition of the steps involved in computations and other information-processing activities. This unique perspective highlights how the history of programming is distinct from the history of the computer, despite the close relationship between the two in the 20th century. The book also discusses how the development of programming languages is related to disparate fields which attempted to give a mechanical account of language on the one hand, and a linguistic account of machines on the other. Topics and features: covers the early development of automatic computing, including Babbage s mechanical calculating engines and the applications of punched-card technology; examines the theoretical work of mathematical logicians such as Kleene, Church, Post and Turing, and the machines built by Zuse and Aiken in the 1930s and 1940s; discusses the role that logic played in the development of the stored program computer; describes the standard model of machine-code programming popularised by Maurice Wilkes; presents the complete table for the universal Turing machine in the Appendices; investigates the rise of the initiatives aimed at developing higher-level programming notations, and how these came to be thought of as languages that could be studied independently of a machine; examines the importance of the Algol 60 language, and the framework it provided for studying the design of programming languages and the process of software development; explores the early development of object-oriented languages, with a focus on the Smalltalk project. This fascinating text offers a new viewpoint for historians of science and technology, as well as for the general reader. The historical narrative builds the s

Electronics: Basic, Analog, and Digital With PSpice

Electronics: Basic, Analog, and Digital With PSpice
$221.18

Electronics: Basic, Analog, and Digital with PSpice does more than just make unsubstantiated assertions about electronics. Compared to most current textbooks on the subject, it pays significantly more attention to essential basic electronics and the underlying theory of semiconductors. In discussing electrical conduction in semiconductors, the author addresses the important but often ignored fundamental and unifying concept of electrochemical potential of current carriers, which is also an instructive link between semiconductor and ionic systems at a time when electrical engineering students are increasingly being exposed to biological systems. The text presents the background and tools necessary for at least a qualitative understanding of new and projected advances in microelectronics. The author provides helpful PSpice simulations and associated procedures (based on schematic capture, and using OrCADr 16.0 Demo software), which are available for download. These simulations are explained in considerable detail and integrated throughout the book. The book also includes practical, real-world examples, problems, and other supplementary material, which helps to demystify concepts and relations that many books usually state as facts without offering at least some plausible explanation. With its focus on fundamental physical concepts and thorough exploration of the behavior of semiconductors, this book enables readers to better understand how electronic devices function and how they are used. The book’s foreword briefly reviews the history of electronics and its impact in today’s world.

Musical Performance: A Comprehensive Approach: Theory, Analytical Tools, and Case Studies

Musical Performance: A Comprehensive Approach: Theory, Analytical Tools, and Case Studies
$210.47

This book is a first sketch of what the overall field of performance could look like as a modern "scientific field" but not its stylistically differentiated practice, pedagogy, and history. Musical performance is the most complex field of music. It comprises the study of a composition ‘s expression in terms of analysis, emotion, and gesture, and then its transformation into embodied reality, turning formulaic facts into dramatic movements of human cognition. Combining these components in a creative way is a sophisticated mix of knowledge and mastery, which more resembles the cooking of a delicate recipe than a rational procedure. This book is the first one aiming at such comprehensive coverage of the topic, and it does so also as a university text book. We include musicological and philosophical aspects as well as empirical performance research. Presenting analytical tools and case studies turns this project into a demanding enterprise in construction and experimental setups of performances, especially those generated by the music software Rubato. We are happy that this book was written following a course for performance students at the School of Music of the University of Minnesota. Their education should not be restricted to the canonical practice. They must know the rationale for their performance. It is not sufficient to learn performance with the old-fashioned imitation model of the teacher’s antetype, this cannot be an exclusive tool since it dramatically lacks the poetical precision asked for by Adorno’s and Benjamin’s micrologic. Without such alternatives to intuitive imitation, performance risks being disconnected from the audience.

Computer Architecture: A Minimalist Perspective

Computer Architecture: A Minimalist Perspective
$210.47

This book examines computer architecture, computability theory, and the history of computers from the perspective of minimalist computing – a framework in which the instruction set consists of a single instruction. This approach is different than that taken in any other computer architecture text, and it is a bold step. The audience for this book is researchers, computer hardware engineers, software engineers, and systems engineers who are looking for a fresh, unique perspective on computer architecture. Upper division undergraduate students and early graduate students studying computer architecture, computer organization, or embedded systems will also find this book useful. A typical course title might be "Special Topics in Computer Architecture." The organization ofthe book is as follows. First, the reasons for studying such an "esoteric" subject are given. Then, the history and evolution of instruction sets is studied with an emphasis on how modern computing has features ofone instruction computing. Also, previous computer systems are reviewed to show how their features relate to one instruction computers. Next, the primary forms of one instruction set computing are examined. The theories of computation and of Turing machines are also reviewed to examine the theoretical nature of one instruction computers. Other processor architectures and instruction sets are then mapped into single instructions to illustrate the features of both types of one instruction computers. In doing so, the features of the processor being mapped are highlighted.

History and GIS: Epistemologies, Considerations and Reflections

History and GIS: Epistemologies, Considerations and Reflections
$169.99

Geographical Information Systems (GIS) either as standard GIS or custom made Historical GIS (HGIS) have become quite popular in some historical sub-disciplines, such as Economic and Social History or Historical Geography. Mainstream history, however, seems to be rather unaffected by this trend. More generally speaking: Why is it that computer applications in general have failed to make much headway in history departments, despite the first steps being undertaken a good forty years ago? With the spatial turn in full swing in the humanities, and many historians dealing with spatial and geographical questions, one would think GIS would be welcomed with open arms. Yet there seems to be no general anticipation by historians of employing GIS as a research tool. As mentioned, HGIS are popular chiefly among Historical Geographers and Social and Economic Historians. The latter disciplines seem to be predestined to use such software through the widespread quantitative methodology these disciplines have employed traditionally. Other historical sub-disciplines, such as Ancient History, are also very open to this emerging technology since the scarcity of written sources in this field can be mitigated by inferences made from an HGIS that has archaeological data stored in it, for example. In most of Modern History, however, the use of GIS is rarely seen. The intellectual benefit that a GIS may bring about seems not be apparent to scholars from this sub-discipline (and others). This book wants to investigate and discuss this controversy. Why does the wider historian community not embrace GIS more readily? While one cannot deny that the methodologies linked with a GIS follow geographical paradigms rather than historical ones, the potential of GIS as a ‘killer application’ for digital historical scholarship should be obvious. This book brings together authors from Geography and History to discuss the value of GIS for historical research. The focus, however, will not be on the "how,"

The New Production of Users: Changing Innovation Collectives and Involvement Strategies

The New Production of Users: Changing Innovation Collectives and Involvement Strategies
$150.00

Behind the steady stream of new products, technologies, systems and services in our modern societies there is prolonged and complicated battle around the role of users. How should designers get to know the users interests and needs? Who should speak for the users? How may designers collaborate with users and in what ways may users take innovation into their own hands? "The New Production of Users" offers a rare overview of these issues. It traces the history of designer-user relations from the era of mass production to the present days. Its focus lies in elaborating the currently emerging strategies and approaches to user involvement in business and citizen contexts. It analyses the challenges in the practical collaborations between designers and users, and it investigates a number of cases, where groups of users collectively took charge of innovation. In addition to a number of new case studies, the book provides a thorough account of theories of user involvement as well as and offers further developments to these theories. As a part of this, the book relates to the wide spectrum of fields currently associated with user involvement, such as user-centered design, participatory design, user innovation, open source software, cocreation and peer production. Exploring the nexus between users and designers, between efforts to democratize innovation and to mobilize users for commercial purposes, this multi-disciplinary book will be of great interest to academics, policy makers and practitioners in fields such as Innovation Studies, Innovation Policy, Science and Technology Studies, Cultural Studies, Consumption studies, Marketing, e-commerce, Media Studies as well as Design research."

Historical Tales and National Identity: An Introduction to Narrative Social Psychology

Historical Tales and National Identity: An Introduction to Narrative Social Psychology
$145.00

Social psychologists argue that people s past weighs on their present. Consistent with this view, Historical Tales and National Identity outlines a theory and a methodology which provide tools for better understanding the relation between the present psychological condition of a society and representations of its past. Author Janos Laszlo argues that various kinds of historical texts including historical textbooks, texts derived from public memory (e.g. media or oral history), novels, and folk narratives play a central part in constructing national identity. Consequently, with a proper methodology, it is possible to expose the characteristic features and contours of national identities. In this book Laszlo enhances our understanding of narrative psychology and further elaborates his narrative theory of history and identity. He offers a conceptual model that draws on diverse areas of psychology – social, political, cognitive and psychodynamics – and integrates them into a coherent whole. In addition to this conceptual contribution, he also provides a major methodological innovation: a content analytic framework and software package that can be used to analyse various kinds of historical texts and shed new light on national identity. In the second part of the book, the potential of this approach is empirically illustrated, using Hungarian national identity as the focus. The author also extends his scope to consider the potential generalizations of the approach employed. Historical Tales and National Identity will be of great interest to a broad range of student and academic readers across the social sciences and humanities: in psychology, history, cultural studies, literature, anthropology, political science, media studies, sociology and memory studies.

Streamline Numerical Well Test Interpretation: Theory and Method

Streamline Numerical Well Test Interpretation: Theory and Method
$126.00

The conventional and modern well test interpretation methods are an important tool in the petroleum engineer s toolkit. Used in the exploration and discovery phase of a field, they are performed to determine the quality of a well or to permit estimation of producing rates at different producing pressures. However once a field enters the middle and later development phase, the reservoir flow environment grows increasingly complex and conventional or modern methods do not satisfy the needs of old field development and evaluation. Based on over 10 years of field and research experience, "Streamline Numerical Well Test Interpretation Theory and Method" provides an effective method for the determination of residual oil distribution for the middle and mature phases of a field. One of the most advanced books available, the author explains the development history of well test theory, analyzes the limitation of modern well test interpretation method, and proposes the concept and framework of numerical well test. This is quickly followed by an introduction of basic principles and solution procedures of streamline numerical simulation theory and method. The book then systematically applies streamline numerical well test interpretation models to a multitude of reservoir types, ranging from single layer reservoir to multi-layer reservoirs. The book presents multi-parameter streamline numerical well test automatic match interpretation method based on double-population genetic algorithm, which lays the foundation to fast automatic match of numerical well test. The book introduces streamline numerical well test interpretation software with independent intellectual property right which is programmed based on the above theoretical studies. Software Composition: 7th International Symposium, SC 2008, Budapest, Hungary, March 29-30, 2008. Proceedings
$125.28

The goal of the International Symposia on Software Composition is to advance the state of the research in component-based software development. We focus on the challenges related to component development, reuse, veri?cation and, of course, composition. Softwarecompositionisbecomingmoreandmoreimportant as innovation in software engineering shifts from the development of individual components to their reuse and recombination in novel ways. To this end, for the 2008 edition, researchers were solicited to contribute on topics related to component adaptation techniques, composition languages, calculi and type systems, as well as emerging composition techniques such as aspect-oriented programming, service-oriented architectures, and mashups. In line with previous editions of SC, contributions were sought focusing on both theory and practice, with a particular interest in e?orts relating them. This LNCS volume contains the proceedings of the 7th International S- posium on Software Composition, which was held on March 29 30, 2008, as a satellite event of the European Joint Conferences on Theory and Practice of Software (ETAPS), in Budapest, Hungary. We received 90 initial submissions from all over the world, out of which 70 were considered for evaluation by a Program Committee consisting of 30 – ternational experts. Among these submissions, we selected 13 long papers and 6 short papers to be included in the proceedings and presented at the conf- ence. Each paper went through a thoroughrevisionprocess and was reviewedby three to? ve reviewers. This ensured the necessary quality for publishing these proceedings in time for the event, a? rst in the history of the symposium."
